L’ombre et la Lumière in English
English lyrics reviewed and translated by John Elkhoury
COMPREHENSION DIFFICULTY: HARD

Eté mille huit cent soixante-huit, quelque part dans l’Grand Ouest
Summer 1868, somewhere in the Far West
He jumped onto his horse and disappeared instantly
The saloon door is still swinging; outside the wind swirls up the dust
He rides towards his exit without ever looking back
Est-ce qu’il cherche ou est-ce qu’il fuit? Est-il sûr ou incertain?
Is he looking (for something) or is he running? Is he sure or uncertain?
Is he trying to catch up or escape his destiny?
He will build an empire, made of shadow or light

De l’ombre ou de la lumière
Shadow or light
Lequel des deux nous éclaire?
Which one of the two will enlighten us?
I march towards the sun in the colors of winter
De l’ombre ou de la lumière
Shadow or light
Depuis le temps que j’espère
How long have I wished
To find in a smile, all the laws of the universe

Winter 2008, somewhere in Paris
I started the car up to escape these rotten times
The café door still trembling; outside, the rain lashes (hits) the asphalt
A chacun sa ruée vers l’or, j’accélère à travers la brume
Everyone has his road to gold, I accelerate across the haze
Since my time is limited, my choices must be the best
It’s a race against the clock or a race against the fear
It’s always the same ride, we aim for the gleaming light straight ahead
Even if this quest is meaningless, I run to feel free

De l’ombre ou de la lumière
Shadow or light
Lequel des deux nous éclaire?
Which one of the two will enlighten us?
I march towards the sun in the colors of winter
De l’ombre ou de la lumière
Shadow or light
Depuis le temps que j’espère
How long have I wished
To find in a smile, all the laws of the universe

Centuries have passed, but it’s always the same ride
As-tu peur que la route s’achève?
Are you afraid of running off the road?
Mais cette course est insensée
But this journey is meaningless
Did you place a name on all the lips?… the lips….

De l’ombre ou de la lumière
Shadow or light
Des astres qui nous éclaire
The stars who enlighten us
I march towards the sun in the colors of winter
De l’ombre ou de la lumière
Shadow or light
Depuis le temps que j’espère
How long have I’ve wished
To find in a smile, all the laws of the universe

To find in a smile, all the laws of the universe

Starting with an interesting piano rift and mellow groove, Calogero knows how to start a song. The full orchestra and the booming bass line throughout the song provide an added bonus to me. Created in 2009, this single is a duet between Calogero and Grand Corps Malade; to me, having two singers adds more depth to the song. As we traverse across the lyrics I’m very happy that this isn’t just another blatant love song and that the lyrics provide different words for a non-native to enjoy. The lyrics from both verses suggest that for centuries, our universe hasn’t really changed much… our singer, Calogero, tells us that everybody always wants the same things in life, he asks us if we are afraid of looking for something else. Even if there is a destiny, he runs to feel free and in control. Are our lives meaningless? I’d love to see your interpretations of these beautiful lyrics below.
