Is French EASY to Learn?

Apparently French people believe that French is hard to learn. But is that actually true? While I think that French is easy to learn now, I’ve used the language for the past 12 years.

The words “easy” and “difficult” are relative. What’s easy for one person may seem impossible for another. When I first started learning French, concepts seemed difficult and it was hard to memorize new vocabulary. But after you use the language over and over again – you begin to truly understand. I even think and dream in French nowadays.

How long does it take to learn French?

It depends on a few factors. I start by looking at your underlying motivation to learn French, your surrounding environment, your learning strategies, and your L1 (mother tongue).

Compare someone who is in France speaking with the locals and getting as much practice as possible versus somebody learning on their own or learning only through a French class.

Compare someone who REALLY wants to learn French versus someone being forced to learn it for college credits.

Compare someone who speaks a romance language, like French, versus someone who doesn’t.

There’s too much to consider!

But if you started from zero knowledge of French today and you wanted to be conversational in French? It’ll take a year or two of semi-consistent practice. If you wanted to be fully fluent in French, we’re talking years – not months – of dedicated studying and practicing.

What’s the BEST way to Learn French?

The absolute best approach is something known as immersion. You take yourself and relocate to a francophone area for a long period of time. However, this isn’t feasible for everyone! Imagine packing your bags, dropping your life, and moving to France next month… is it possible?

An alternative is to study on your own time, attend lessons, or find a tutor and then visit France whenever you can for some practice.

Listening to French music throughout the day is a great way to stay on top of things. You could also watch a few French movies with subtitles.
