A few weeks ago, I wrote an extensive article on whether or not language learning software was worth your money. In essence, while immersing yourself in France is an amazing way to build your French skills, but oftentimes you need that little tug in the right direction: a grammar book, a French course, software, or even just a dedicated tutor. These are tools that can help you succeed.
I became fluent in French simply by taking courses in high school, college, and visiting France a lot. But on the side of all that extra practice was language learning software such as Duolingo, Frantastique, Rosetta Stone, or
Udemy.
So today, I wanted to talk about Udemy and whether or not it can help you learn French.
Udemy is the world’s largest online marketplace for teaching and learning. Over 10,000 instructors have published online courses on Udemy with everything from programming to yoga, marketing to guitar lessons, and yes, even French courses! Udemy has a large student base too. Over 11 million students in 150+ countries are taking these courses to advanced their careers and pursue their passions.
Tons of French Courses, All Reviewed by Peers
Udemy is sort of the Amazon of online learning. It’s a huge marketplace. So on the platform, you’re able to peruse through multiple courses, look at their introductory videos, and get a feel for the instructor(s). Each intro page also tells you what you’re learning. The best part is that there’s a wide selection of courses for you to choose from and the Udemy French courses span multiple levels.
Udemy has French courses for beginners, intermediate learners, or even just children.
It’s up to you to decide whether you want to learn to speak conversational French, learn all the French tenses, or improve your French with stories.
You’ll have access to these courses across all devices – your desktop, laptop, tablet, or even mobile phone.
During the course you’ll have the ability to ask questions and communicate with other students through mini-forums. Likewise, you’ll be connect with your teacher. After completing the course, you can leave your honest feedback. This sort of ecosystem helps ensure that great courses rise to the top, making it more likely that you stumble upon it. It’s sort of like Amazon, where user reviews can make or break a sale.
Pricing of French Courses on Udemy
What I like about Udemy is their updated pricing structure. Udemy truly wants affordable courses for students, so in 2016 they mandated that paid courses fall between $20 and no more than $50.They said that this move creates more trust in the marketplace.
Above all, this rigid pricing is great news for students on the platform.
Before courses were priced in a crazy manner, which made it hard to discern why one course was $297 and another was $35. Now, all teachers have an even playing field and the lower price helps students. So now you can find a French courses that spans multiple lessons for just $20.
That means you don’t have an excuse not to practice your French.
But what I love the most about the pricing is that $20-$50 is very reasonable as a price. For instance, the rate for one-on-one French tutoring can easily surpass $20/hour depending on your teacher’s expertise and your location (I know, I was a French tutor).
Udemy lets you learn the essentials of French without breaking the bank.
My Personal Experience
I wouldn’t recommend learning French on Udemy without trying it myself. I stumbled upon a course and purchased it for $25.
The course is for beginners of French.
What I liked about Udemy from the start is how clean and easy it is for users. The site has a nice, simple design. Signing up and paying for courses is simple to.
After doing the first few lessons, it featured an enjoyable pace and it was overall easy-to-follow. Now the course didn’t do much for me because I’m fluent in French, but I understood the choices of vocabulary and situations that the instructor decided to share. The course quickly explained the differences between tu & vous and then followed through with situations that beginners in French need.
So that’s my experience with taking French courses on Udemy. I’d love to hear about your experiences.
